What Is The Brazilian Keratin Treatment?
The Brazilian Keratin Treatment is a process which has been around for a few years and has gained a newly found popularity with the other Brazilian styles that have become en vogue lately. There are conflicting reviews of which of the Brazilian styles (including the Brazilian Keratin Treatment (BKT), Brazilian Blowout, Brazilian Blowdry, etc.) are the “best”, so I’d like to take a moment and just explain what the BKT is and how it works:
The Brazilian Keratin Treatment contains Keratin (obviously) which is a type of protein that is found naturally in most hair.
“Keratin is formed by keratinocytes, living cells which make up a large part of skin, hair, nails, and other keratin containing parts of the body. The cells slowly push their way upwards, eventually dying and forming a protective layer of cells. Thousands of these cells are shed every day, and the process can be accelerated by various medical conditions, such as psoriasis. Damage to the external layer of keratin can cause skin, hair, and nails to look unhealthy or flaky.” (Source: WiseGeek)
The Brazilian Keratin Treatment infuses your hair which is composed of dry, damaged, and dead cells with new, healthy cells which protect your hair and restore it to it’s normal silky smooth condition – all without using any harsh chemicals. It only works on the cuticle and not the cortex of your hair so you don’t have to worry about damage. As a result, since keratin is a naturally dissolving protein, it will eventually wash out of your hair and you’ll need to re-apply but from our research it looks like most people have to do this, on average, every 2 months or so.
One advantage of the Brazilian Keratin Treatment over another popular treatment called the Japanese straightener is that the Japanese straightener contains a high alkaline content which can eventually damage your hair.
All in all, the BKT is another treatment in the arsenal of popular Brazilian treatments that are available on the market today. We would appreciate your comments as to which of these treatments works best for you – and please include what type of hair you have. What works wonders for one person’s hair may not be as spectacular on another so by working together with your comments we can all help each other choose the PERFECT treatment for each other!

the BKT definitely works on African American hair…Ive had it done..but I miss my natural hair, so want it to grow out…mine hasn’t washed out completely though and its been about 5 months…hair grows really fast though. I have alot of new growth and my ends are still somewhat straight…so I would have to get another treatment and it would be reapplied to my roots
I am afro west indian and have had the treatment done several times. worked very well despite being told by several salons in the UK that it does not work on afro hair. My hair is now silky and manageable and I can even just wash and go without any frizzing.
Has to reapply about every 2 months because of regrowth.
According to reviews and pictures, few or no African American women have used this product. While African American women have different hair textures, mine is kinky coarse with stiff curls. Would this product work for me?
Had the Brazilian Blowout done last Thursday. My salon uses the Marcia Teixeira brand of brazilian keratin. It is one of the newer formulations, with less formaldehyde, so no watering eyes! I paid only $150, and expect it to last for up to four months, with proper care. Washing less often, and with the recommended sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners, and rinsing well after pool swimming, will help it look beautiful longer!
My natural hair is very fine, but with a tight, messy curl. Now I have smooth, swingy hair, that is so healthy! It looks like teenager hair!
I had done last summer and my hair was easy to maintain for about 4-5months. Even though I would like to do it again, I am hesitant for the contents in this product. I am waiting for this company to provide statements that this product is safe to continue using it. For now the benefits do not out weight the benefits, as this product appears to contain carcinogens.
I am an african american. can I used this product I usually use an relaxer
Just had the BB done last week. My hair is naturally frizzy and thick. The disadvantages are the time spent in the salon (about 3 hours) and it looks flat on the first day. When I shampoo it for the first time, it was not flat. I spent $150.00 in San Diego Ca. I thought it was well worth the price. However, to continue this process for the next time around, is it necessary to have it redone or can the growth only be done?I did not like the smell and it made my eyes water alot. But over all I liked it. I also heard that if you continue with this process again, it can damage your hair. Is this true?
Is this process good for afro american hair and if so, why is there limited advertisement?
I think i am pregnant and have been scheduled for this treatment, what effect does it have on pregnancy. just read that one should not straighten or colour hair in 1st trimester. please help

I had the treatment done back in September 2009 and it lasted until August 2010. Now, all of the hair that was exposed to the BKT is still bone straight. The curly parts of my hair have returned with the new growth. It appears as though the BKT has to grow out, if you are taking care of it as instructed, using Sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. Also, I want to add to the record that my hair NEVER got frizzy with the BKT!!! Talk about a happy camper!!!
Had the treatment done yesterday, absolutely love it. My eyes watered a little during the treatment but my hair has never looked better.
