Brazilian Blowout and Ethnic/African American Hair
There have been quite a few comments left on this blog in the past 6 months with regards to the Brazilian Blowout and its’ effectiveness on Ethnic or African American hair, so I thought I would post this great video that I found on YouTube by Alec Kara of the Argyle Salon & Spa in LA (home of the Brazilian Blowout!). Many people are asking if the Brazilian Blowout works well on African American hair, and since a picture is worth a thousand words, this video should certainly put your mind at ease if you’re worried about how it will work on your hair! I’ve also included a great before/after photo set that was sent in to us by a certified Brazilian Blowout stylist.

Hey,
I’ve heard about the brazilian blowout but I’m still suspicious. I’ve seen some good reviews about it and also some bad ones. I got a relaxer in my hair when I was 13 and it didn’t work out well. My hair ended up being damaged and I had to cut it and put it in braids. I’ve been wearing braids for 1 year now and it’s grown A LOT. I’m happy that it’s longer, and I love my hair. My dad is mixed with middle eastern and Native american, but I don’t know about my mom. I have very curly hair and it’s really kinky some parts are more kinkier than others. But I’m happy that my hair right now is thick and growing. I think I might wait another year before I do something with it. I want to get the Brazilian Blowout or the Brazilian Blowout Zero, but I’m scared if it’s going to make my hair fall out. Because I’ve heard some bad things about it as well as some good things. I don’t know if it would be best to get the BB Zero or the Original BB. I really don’t want to damage my hair.
I live in Charleston, South Carolina, so I don’t think there’s a stylist near me.
But if you can please give me some information about it and what’s the likelihood of my hair results I would really appreciate it.
my email is kaynaravenell@yahoo.com
Thanks
It is nice to read all the success story of the Brazilian Blowout; however, this video does not help.
1. Did not see the finishing product and
2. This person on the video does not represent the African American woman with natural kinky hair.
Please send me pictures of final results. Thanks
IT IS WONDERFUL, IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT I SAY DO IT. MY DAUGHTER IS 9 AND HAS WHAT THEY WOULD CALL “GOOD HAIR”, THICH AND CURLY!!!!! WHEN WE GOT IT DONE WE COULDN’T STOP TOUCHING HER HAIR, IT WAS LIKE A BARBIEDOLL’S HAIR. IT LASTED FOR ABOUT 4 MONTHS, BEST 4 MONTHS FOR HAIR EVER, WE WILL DO IT AGAIN.
i want to get the bbo but im afraid my hair will fall out. i used to get relaxers but my hair began to fall out. im african and have kinky hair. what will the bbo do to my hair?

Here’s the video, hope it comes up this time!
Read my thread below re: my location & shop location. Also, check this out, it should help you!
I’m the one who LOVES my BB, also African American, and I did some research into shampoos to use that will help the results last and the one I found with ingredients closest to the Brazillian Blowout brand shampoo (fraction of the price!) is Age Beautiful Fullness and Body shampoo, I got it at Sally’s for $11. It is Sulfate free, and has Keratin just like the BB Brand product. You can use any conditioner, it won’t harm your blowout. A shampoo with sulfates will strip your hair of the keratin that’s sealing the hair and giving it the nice, shiney, straight result. Hope that helps!
I live in Southern California, just north of San Diego in the small city Murrieta, near Temecula wine country. The Shop is named Bella B’s and here’s their contact info. The owner, Caroline, did my hair. It has been exactly 4 weeks and I still LOVE the results!! Each time I was my hair it dries easier, no frizz, and still has a nice shine to it w/o any product! I’m still receiving compliments and it was well worth the money.
Good Luck!
Tashi!!
I am in California! Where is this shop you speak of?
Tashi,
Was your hair completely relaxer-free when you got the BBO? I’ve been natural for 2 years and my hair is about 18 in long now and I’m thinking of getting the BBO, but don’t want to relax too. How straight did it get your hair and did it keep after washing? Are you in Nor Cal or SoCal? If you’re in Nor Cal, where did you go?
Thanks
Any shampoo that is sulfate free
Hi I just got a Brazilian Blowout. I am african american. What products should I use daily after getting the Brazlilian Blowout?
I have RA which affects my immune system. For the moms with children who have hair issues ( it used to take me three hours to blow dry her hair) I would be really careful about using any chemical on my child. This would especially apply if my child had an underlying health condition, ask her doctor. I get New Era relaxers on my hair and it is the only one that I can use, no burning, it lasts about eight weeks. The only reason I would recommend NEW ERA is because it is an old product that works and the stylist does not have th wear gloves. Still for children ponytails and occasionally letting them wear their hair out is a great plan. Later they can decide what to do to their hair. She is now a 26 year old lawyer who does not straighten her hair.
This is not a children’s hair product. Use a blowdryer or pony tails one on top and two on the sides
I an a 54 year old mom!
I was thinking the same thing while watching the video. Her hair did look like a weave, and I thought we were actually going to see him apply the product. When he didn’t I knew it was fake.
I’m in South Africa where can I get my hair done
Brazilian Straightening has become a pretty big phenomenon in the U.S., as women are constantly looking for a low maintenance way to combat frizz and restore health and shine to their over processed hair. Alec Kara a hairstylist from New York , worked with original creators at Argyle Salon & Spa. Alec Kara provides a product line that helps this treatment improve the texture of the hair considerably. “I really believe it is important to stay connected with the latest treatments and techniques.” The True Brazilian Blowout utilizes amino acid, keratin-based products to smooth and relax hair and calm dry fly-always, giving it the appearance of a freshly blown-out mane for up to eight weeks. Formaldehyde-free, products are infused with the acai(berry), which is rich in antioxidants and allows hair to retain the silky results for even longer. While earlier renditions of this Brazilian-style blowout were criticized for their harsh chemical contents, this particular one exposes hair to less toxicity than a basic dye. The 90-minute True Brazilian treatment is simple. Alec Kara starts by washing a client’s hair so that the products can better adhere to the hair shaft. He then applies the the treatment to each strand. Next, the hair is blown dry and flat ironed; the heat from the blow dryer and flat iron activate the product . When he finishes flat-ironing the hair, clients are ready to go, as the formulation can be neutralized at home with basic water. This new formula eliminates the hassle of having to wait 48 hours before washing the hair. Alec Kara is excited about the results he’s experiencing with this newly formulated product line. “Improved technology has really helped this treatment evolve,” he says, in the past clients needed to keep their hair straight and dry for the first 48 hours, whereas now the results are immediate. “This treatment is perfect for all types of hair and allows active individuals to maintain soft, beautiful hair without a lot of effort. And, the results are cumulative, so the more you have the treatment done, the more the appearance of your hair will evolve.” It doesn’t change the texture and clients do not loose the body of their hair and instead they get a healthy, shiny and beautiful hair. if u have any other questions, feel free to contact me 8187208521 or scungile@gmail.com
I just got the BBO for the 1st time and I LOVE the results!!!!!!! I am african american and stopped relaxing my hair last year due to thinning and breaking issues and this is sooooooo much better than any relaxer result I EVER had! My hair looks healthy from root to tips and it feels soooo smooth. It shines, it moves, and so far so great! I’ll post again after I wash it and we’ll see if I’m still as happy, but so far I’m very impressed. My stylist (at a black shop) was very reasonable ($100 special)… this is only slightly more than a relaxer where I live in Cali.
And, there was no “burning” of my scalp like when getting a touch up, lol =)
I just got the Brazilian Blowout a couple of weeks ago and it turned out horribly and I was wondering how soon after you get one can you Perm your hair? Does anyone know?
I live in Northern, VA and wanted to know if there was anyone in the area doing the BB. This site shows the closest salon in located in DC.
this is just sad. why is she lieing about her hair. did she really believe black ppl wld fall for tht?
I am a stylist in the Northern Virginia area. Go to the Brazilian Blowout website and look up the salon locator for La or call them and ask them for the information. It takes them time to list the certified stylist on their website. If you get it done make sure the salon uses the Brazilian Blowout brand. I have used several keratin treatment and I love this one. A lot of the Keratin treatments contain formaldehyde, it’s just not good for the stylist to breathe it in when we flat iron the hair. The good thing about the keratin treatment is that it does not break down the structure of the hair like a relaxer or the Japanese treatment. It coats the hair with keratin and it leaves the hair shiny and frizz free. The more you do them the longer they last. You can color your hair and do the Keratin treatment the same day because there is nothing in the treatment that will hurt your hair.
I will be in LA can anyone suggest a salon for this treatment in LA or IL. Thanks
Where are you located? I am in Portland and would like to get this treatment once I remove my braids.
I was so happy to see the comments from the mom of the 8 and 12 year old. I have an appointment Saturday for my 7 year old. Her hair is so thick and gets very fuzzy by the end of the day. I am just looking for a way to keep her hair looking good for longer that a couple hours! Hopefully this will last a few months.
The woman in the video has a weave. So, that is not a testament to how it will work on African American/Ethnic texture hair.
How can I find a stylist in the Grand Rapids Michigan area? I would like to see if this treatment would work for my 11 year old daughter. She is biracial with extremely thick curly hair. We are looking for a solution that does not involve a chemical relaxer.
where could i get the brazilian blowout in the washington dc area? thanks for any advice
I can say as far as the cost inquiry- I am an hour south of Seattle and charging $300-400 would not fly here. In smaller towns, people make less= spend less. I am charging $200 and I do an amazing job. If you find a stylist offering the service cheaper, just make sure they show you before and after pics of what they have done.
Good Luck!
I am happy to know it all worked out for you. I have the same kinds of results on a daily basis with my clients!
Lets help all moms out there!! And girls too!!

At times braids can cause unnatural stress to certain hair textures. Your daughter may be one of the lucky ones. I have seen many a case where the childs hairline is so far back from the stress of braids, that it would take a long time to grow back.
Some times a keratin treatment could strengthen and enhance the childs hair texture. In addition, the treatment could promote hair to grow since it wouldn’t be streesed in braids.
Hope this helps some to decide what is best.
Maria
I am more than welcome to perform the service for you at Lords and Ladies in Pottstown, PA. it is around 45min from you. You can take 422 west and get off on the Hanover Street exit. Our number is 610-327-0777. I specialize in African American texture and ethnic hair.
Hope to hear from you soon!
I am no beautician but 4 years old is too young for any treatment. If you can’t manage her hair, then have it french braided in a cute young girl style.
I have a daughter (she’s not mixed) who’s hair was (and still is) sooo super thick so I understand how hard it is to manage. But I think you should definitely wait on all of this. She is only 4 years old, so I say just put it in pony tails. My daughter is now 13 years old and her hair is really long, even longer than mine. And that’s because I but it in simply pony tails when she was little then at about age 6 she was mature enough to go to the shop and get individuals (braids), but it depends on the child. My daughter wasn’t very tender headed and was able to sit for a couple hours at a really early age. So if your daughter is mature enough, in a couple years she can get braids. Braids are so easy to maintain, she can wear them down, up, or however. They also are really healthy to the hair, they really help the hair grow, and they last a good while. Also if your child sweats during the day or at night or wants to go swimming, she can do so in braids. My daughter was satisfied with braids until middle school, now she gets her hair pressed and i’m so glad I kept her hair natural and in braids when she was little because now its healthy and long. So at the end of the day, the choice of course is yours, but I think you can just put it in pigtails until she is mature enough to get a treatment like this which requires a long drawn out process. There isn’t a certain set-in-stone age your daughter can or should get this but it’s a maturity thing. I see so many moms who try to bring really young girls to the shop who just simply aren’t ready for it. So good luck and I really hope I was of help to you.
So, I am seeing the cost for the BB on this site listed at around $150-$200. Is that the cost to the stylist? Alec is charging $350+ (West Los Angeles prices) someone reported paying $450 why are the costs all over the place? It makes me think anyone not charging my arm and leg is not going to be qualified. Is it possible to get the BB done well at an affordable cost by a well certified stylist? ? L.A.? Pasadena?
Okay, I got the understanding that this Brazillian Blow Out changes the texture of your hair and that its really convenient for most lifestyles. But what are the health benefits of it for the hair. My 11 year old african american daughter who had a head full of hair. Just endured a medical situation because of her thyroids. Which left her with still a decent amount of hair but not at its best state. So I’m wanting to know in what way will her hair benefit from this? Will it allow her to no longer have the need for blow dryers and flat irons? (appliances involving heat on the hair). Could possible the brazillian blow out worsen her hair situation? Are there chemicals in your products? She had to drink radioactive iodine to rid her of her thyroids, so is there anything in your products that would interact inappropriately with that? And eventually she’s going to be taking a medication that she will remain on for the rest of her life that will act as her thyroid. Maybe finding out the ingredients you have in your products and then running them by her doctor would be more appropriate. But any of the other information you could give me I would appreciate.
Hi,
Where can i get brazillian blowout done in the UK??….
Pictures above are of the 8 year old girl. Before picture to show texture of hair and after shows how straight and smooth it can be…..
Hi Kay,
I have done this on an 8 year old and a 12 year old with African American hair. Amazing results! It is most exciting for the Mom who has to do their hair!!! I will try and post pictures today. The answer I received about the age was that young hair is already healthy and wont have a dramatic result. Well, with African American hair, as you know, it has plenty of porosity due to how fragile it is and just having to get through it! I would recommend lots of things to do for her during the process and a trained, experienced Brazilian Blowout Stylist.
HI,
Where can I get a Brazilian Blowout in Philadelphia, PA area (don’t mind driving) but in a salon that does African American and ethnic hair as well??
THanks. :0}
it would have been nice to see the end result.
Okay…where is the end result? We love Brazilian Blowouts in Minneapolis! Lets see the end result!!!
I’m mixed, and my husband is black and our daughter has HIS hair (100%). My hair is curly but hers is VERY ethnic. Because her hair is so different than mine (i can just wet mine, gel it and scrunch it for shiny curls — but I can’t do that to her hair, it doesn’t curl up AT ALL), I have a very hard time trying to do her hair. I don’t really want to put a relaxer in her hair because she’s only 4 years old AND I just don’t think chemicals in her hair would be a good idea. So my question is would the Brazilian Blowout be something good for her hair? Also, is she too young for this process? At what age would you recommend if she’s too young?
